Tuesdays for Travis - Ice Fishing on Spray Lakes

[Ice Fishing on Spray Lakes, Kananaskis - click for larger photo]

A hut or wind tents are necessary to keep out of the wind which gusts through the valley. A power auger is recommended to drill through ice.

I would recommend beginning ice fishing enthusiasts use a guide to learn the basics. An outfitter from the Canmore area, Keith Rae, mentioned in the last source, has important tips like checking the ice thickness before venturing out.

That tent looks pretty lonely out there.

Wonderful landscape, however, I'd rather hike around the lake! I have spent quite a few hours outdoors in the low single digits and cannot imagine sitting still for hours while waiting for the fish to bite. Have you ever tried?

Happy New Year!

What a great photo. I hate being cold so I couldn't even imagine doing this. Have you ever been ice fishing?

Charles, it's best to think of the hut as an oasis of warmth.

Merisi and David, I have been ice fishing when I visited friends in Quebec. I was dressed warmly, had a thermos of hot coffee, and lucky me, had others to keep me company. I wouldn't want to do this by myself in case something untoward happened.

Believe it or not, I have been ice fishing. Once.

François, children seem to be protected from most activities that might harm them, you and I were included in this beneficial way.

Barrie, sometimes you only have to partake in an activity once. The memories remain for future use.

Kia ora Barbara,
That certainly is a different picture than the summer we are now in here in New Zealand. However growing up in Wisconsin I did a lot of ice fishing always dressed warmly and sometimes even in heated shanties towed out onto the lakes by car. Very thick ice! I think though in this picture my attention would be drawn to those mountains, just beautiful. I would have to put doen my ice fishing pole and get amongst them. I look forward to enjoying your place here. Have a great day.
Rangimarie,
Robb

That looks exactly like what I need right now. And thanks for everything you've done for me and my family.

Travis, those isolated areas will always be there when you need them. Come any time to clear your mind.
